If you have purchased a new frying pan that is not pre-seasoned or if the seasoning on your pan has worn out and you are not aware of how to season a cast iron frying pan, then this post gives you the procedure to be carried out for seasoning.

Procedure to Season a Cast Iron Frying Pan

Given below is the procedure to be followed:

• Scrub the frying pan clean with warm soapy water and dry it.
• Warm up the pan a bit and coat it with a layer of melted shortening to the outer side as well as inner side; it is advised not to use liquid cooking oil.
• Pre-heat the oven to 350° and place the pan inside on a cooking sheet with a foil cover so that it can catch any drips.
• Set the oven at this temperature for approximately 20 minutes; decrease the temperature if it starts smoking.
• Remove the pan and drain off the excessive grease. Place back the pan in the oven in an upside down position for around two to three hours if the pan is new else re-seasoning may require about one hour.
• Switch off the oven and allow the pan to cool down before taking it away from the oven.

You can follow this procedure to season a cast iron frying pan, which will last for along time if proper care is taken.
